Social Tots is a lively 45/50 minute weekly class, for older babies and toddlers from around 8 months, or crawling confidently, to approximately 2 and half to 3 years. Sessions are filled with lots of different play experiences to stimulate and enhance your child’s physical, sensory, social and creative development, and to encourage you to have fun together with lots of opportunities for you to cuddle, play, connect and make new discoveries with your little one every week.
Classes combine a variety of structured and group activities with free play, so don’t worry if your little one doesn’t like to sit still for long, as there is always something new to discover and join in with. Each term we explore a different theme, from colours and numbers to opposites and parts of the body, to enhance learning in a way that is age appropriate and fun.
Even at such a young age a structured playtime, which the classes provide, helps a child to feel secure, giving the confidence to explore, learn and grow, making development more rapid and learning more fun. It is also a great place to start building social skills, first by watching and later through interaction with the others in the group.
Through the classes children will develop and improve;
• Body awareness and gross motor skills.
• The functions of the brain through a wide range of stimulus for all the senses.
• Social awareness through the group environment.
• Communication skills through the use of sign language, songs and rhymes
• Bonding between parent and child.
Plus you will be introduced to simple songs and activities that can be carried on at home to continue the learning and development process.
Each class consists of a number of activities including:
Yoga, Music and Movement
Baby yoga combines stretches, postures and movement to provide stimulation for your little one’s body and mind, and is a great way to connect and have fun together. Practicing yoga can help your child to sleep better, have improved digestion, a stronger immune system and an increase in body awareness and self confidence.
We use nursery rhymes and simple action songs with our yoga practice to add to the enjoyment of the various activities and further stimulate the senses. Music also helps to introduce rhythm, and rhyme to your child, an important part of speech and language development. Simple percussion instruments are also used to provide further opportunity for fun and learning.
Baby Sign Language
As speech and language start to develop and emerge, using sign language is one way in which babies and young toddlers can clearly express what is on their mind. Having a knowledge of this form of communication can increase understanding between you and your little one, give your child a wider vocabulary at an earlier age and avoid the frustrations and tantrums that can result when they are not able to make themselves understood. We will introduce a few simple signs which you and your little one can use aid communication between you.
Multi Sensory and Physical Play
Watch your child’s delight as we play with a wide variety of small and large objects and equipment, from ribbons to rice, lights to lemons, bubbles to beach balls, tunnels, hoops, beanbags and lots more, allowing your child to use his or her senses, body and imagination to explore the world.
Each week brings something new, while including elements that are repeated each week which your child will come to recognise and respond to. A whole world of love, laughter and learning.
We want Social Tots classes to be a relaxed, happy place for you and your child. Don’t worry if they do not want to join in all the activities straight away. At this early age, not participating in an activity is entirely appropriate!! Our group activities are encouraged but we never want to force a child to participate. Experience has shown, though, that the more enthusiastic you are about the activities, the more likely your child is to want to join in, and the quicker they will feel at home. However, please feel comfortable to join in with as much or as little as you would like during the class and take each activity at your child’s pace.
